Derived from the works of authors such as Diane Duane, Mercedes Lackey, and Tamora Pierce, Blue Rose emphasizes deep interpersonal interaction, use of nonviolent solutions, and the search for personal acceptance and redemption. Taking place in the World of Aldea, characters oppose themachinations of the evil lich king of Kern, the fundamentalist Theocracy of Jarzon, and the imperialist Drunaci State while fighting intolerance, protecting nature, and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Despite these positive themes, there are many shades of gray in Strands of Blue Rose, as characters work to balance their light and shadow natures or overcome their darker passions.
Alfred Williams started his Strands of Blue Rose game several years ago as a counterpoint to the grim darkness of the future, and (much to his surprise) it has proved popular with local gamers ever since. While SOBR uses the setting presented in the original core rule books for the game’s background, Alfred uses the Strands of Fate system by Void Star Games as the game’s rules set.
